Deceptions of Night is the second book in this author's Order Of Night series, and follows on from the previous events in Secrets of Night. Ms Cavanaugh has created a world filled with vampires, shape shifters and sorceresses where their tentative truce and alliance is under threat. Not all those of the supernatural world desire peace and treachery and unrest is rife.
Lex is a vampire prince who has been assigned to work as part of the Triad for the safety and wellbeing of all the supernatural races. He is there to replace Kale but there's a case of mistaken identity and he finds himself attacked by a female jaguar shapeshifter and there's no chance he will take that insult lying down!
Shayla has been blackmailed by her alpha to kill the leech that's responsible for recent shape shifter deaths but she finds the tables well and truly turned! Lex is faster, smarter and infuriatingly sexy but he's still a leech ! Shayla has to kill him in order to free her baby brother but some how they manage to form a very shaky truce. When they join forces to try to release Shaylas brother they quickly discover that there is more deceit and treachery rampant then they could ever imagine. Determined to find answers whilst struggling to stay alive Lex and Shayla find comfort in each other's arms but are they too different to make things work? The body count is rising and someone is out for blood! It's not as straightforward as Lex first thought and pretty soon the true face of anarchy will reveal itself!
This is a fast paced story that never lets up! I truly thought that if I blinked I might miss something. It starts with a bang and just doesn't pause and I applaud the author for the breakneck speed of this story. There is absolutely no way anyone reading this could be bored as the pace does not slow down! It's quite a short story but there is plenty of action and world building. We get to know the main characters quite quickly and indeed they get to know each other at the same break neck speed which obviously adds to the fun. Oh and trust me when I say these two characters are smoking hot! Written with style and vivid images that transferred easily as I read , there was a lot of suspense and twists that kept this readers attention focused.
A fascinating world populated with intense characters and I really enjoyed this book. If you want a hot paranormal story with intricate plot and characters to care about then this is a very good place to start . I look forward to reading what else this author creates and sincerely hope that a certain mysterious Xander will soon get his own book.
