--Actual rating 4.5 Skulls

This is the third book in the Sugarland Blue series that features the detectives working in the Sugarland police department . This is a romantic suspense series that features strong men and women who will do whatever it takes to uphold the law but always find time for their loved ones. Prepare to read about mysterious deaths and an insane revenge whilst this fast paced story pulls you in and doesn't let go until the very last page. Gritty and full of emotion this series just keeps getting better with each installment.

In Sugarland Detective Chris Ford is always seen as a bit of a player with an eye for the ladies but seemingly no intention of ever settling down . When he keeps feeling weak and ill he shrugs it off but when his symptoms put him in the path of the lovely Dr Robyn Lassiter his blood pressure rises and it's not just because he's sick! Forced to admit that his mysterious symptoms might be serious Chris wants more than ever to find a cure but he's determined to be around to get to know Robyn better.

Robyn moved to Sugarland with her daughter after the death of her husband. She has thrown herself into her work and can't help but notice that deaths keep occurring that seem oddly similar. When the sexy Detective Chris Ford starts to show the same symptoms her fear starts to rise as it's looking more and more as if someone is poisoning people. There's a connection somewhere but finding it will test all their inner strength as it looks as if time is running out for Chris!

Oh this was a great story and if you normally enjoy the likes of Karen Rose or Karin Slaughter then this book will be right up your street. A fast paced story full of twists and a mystery to solve. It's a truly diabolical plan that the perpetrator has and innocent people are dying because of it. I think what makes it feel worse is the fact that it has taken so long for anyone to realise what's happening and for many the truth is revealed far too late.

Add to all this the human element with a romance that just feels so right and it's a great read. Chris may seem to many to have it all but meeting Robyn shows him just how much he is missing. He is quite a surprise as he jumps head first into the idea of a relationship with the lovely doctor and indeed it's Robyn who seems cautious. It's understandable that as a mother she wouldn't want to push things too quickly but his pursuit of her is lovely to read. Romantic picnics and flowers plus of course hot sex all work together to work their magic though and it's a beautiful thing as this family comes together.

Jo Davis has managed to write a sexy story filled with danger and a cracking ending that will have readers on the edge of their seat. It's a wild ride but there's a heartwarming scene that will leave you truly emotional as Chris finally gets what he had in his sights!

Ms Davis also writes smoking hot stories under the name J D Tyler too and I thoroughly recommend those if you enjoy a paranormal romance.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

This is the seventh full length book in the Elder Races series and it's a series that I love! These books feature various types of creatures from Wyr who naturally can have both an animal and a human form, to Fae - both light and Dark - we even get to meet powerful Djinn, but perhaps the most complicated of all would be those said to have had the Serpent's Kiss, and most commonly referred to as Vampyre! These feared and unnatural creatures are created not born, however they start Vampyres will do whatever is necessary to survive!

Tess is on the run and there's no place to hide. She needs the sort of protection that only a truly powerful member of the Elder Races could offer but although down she's not out! Tess has a plan, become an attendant of a Vampyre and maybe just maybe the threat of starting an all out war to get at her will save her life. Vampyres gather once a year to choose new servants and Tess wangles her way in but she wasn't prepared to be chosen by the monster known as Xavier del Torro! He is the right hand man of his king and his fearsome reputation for violence is legend but for some reason he offers her a position within his home and it's a chance for safety that Tess cannot turn down.

Xavier is master in his own home and bows down to none but there's something about the human Tess that intrigues him. Tess is clearly terrified to be near him so why would she choose to offer herself as an attendant? She is intelligent and capable so why would she want to hide from the world? Xavier has no qualms in taking her in but what he won't do is take her at face value , oh no if Tess has a secret then Xavier will find out what it is! Tess might have run towards one monster but if that's the case just what is following her? Maybe she is out of the frying pan and into the fire!

When you pick up an Elder Races book as a reader you expect action and romance, but this story has a different feel to it. It's not as action packed as some but focuses more on a journey of self discovery. The heroine Tess is strong and capable and oh so brave when she faces Xavier, the Vampyre she offers her blood to but hers is a complicated life. I really liked her as a heroine and thought her both plucky and quite bold but I wasn't convinced that her plan actually made sense. Hiding within the household of one of the most prominent Vampyres would surely get her noticed! Luckily Xavier's plans for her meant she was kept secreted away which allowed her character to develop and gain insight.

Xavier was a complete revelation as previously he has been portrayed as a character that not many would find pleasant! In this story we see a side to him that surprises the reader, he is a man of great depth and nothing seems to faze him. His checkered history is explored but most surprising is his humanity . This is a vampyre with a soul who actually cares and his level of sensitivity was astonishing to read. He's not the usual tall dark brooding muscle bound hero, no he is only slightly above average in form and yet his presence is such that he dominates and fills the space he inhabits. Clearly a man of action but wily enough to know how to use words . Yes he is impressive!

I realize some readers might be disappointed that a Vampyre was the hero in this story and the heroine Tess seems to come out of nowhere but that's what I enjoy about this author's work . Expect the unexpected with Ms Harrison and enjoy the ride because no matter what these larger than life colourful characters will delight and enthrall you.

Kay Hooper was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.

The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father (now retired) and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and Regional Publicist. Kay and Linda also co-own an independent bookstore, Fireside Books and Gifts.

Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas

Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats with various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie. Visit Kay's Pets Page for pics!

Kay also fosters cats and kittens for the Community Pet Center, a non-profit rescue organization on whose board she also sits.

How do you make peace with the dead if the dead aren’t ready to forgive? In New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper’s new novel, the answer lies in the twisting shadows of a small town, and its secrets yet unearthed...

When Deacon James’s younger sister Melanie calls him, terrified, he goes to her aid in the small Georgia town of Sociable. What he finds is a scared young woman in the grip of what she insists is a paranormal nightmare—and murder. Two local men have been killed under mysterious circumstances. And Melanie is the prime suspect.

Trinity Nichols left a high-stress job for quiet, small-town life. But news of the murders has left her—and the town—on edge, especially when there is nothing remotely ordinary about how the men died. And her investigation is yielding more than she bargained for, including a group of strangers who have descended on Sociable, some with abilities Trinity finds hard to believe, and agendas she refuses to trust. For some reason, they know a lot more than they should about what’s happening in town. And what’s happening is growing stranger by the minute.

Now Trinity, Deacon, and this odd band of FBI agents must work together to solve a series of disturbances so incredible that Trinity, and the town of Sociable, will be changed forever. She just isn’t certain who—or what—will be left standing when it’s all over.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Haunted is book 15 of the BISHOP/SPECIAL CRIMES UNIT series and has an incredible premise: A division of the FBI made up of agents and consultants that happens to have preternatural abilities and handle all of these 'extraordinary' cases that the regular Bureau won't take on.

In Haunted, small town Sheriff Trinity Nichols is hunting for a serial killer going after members of The Group, people who went to school together, ended up back in Sociable, and still remain friends. Working with SCU Special Agent Hollis Templeton - Medium, S.A Reese DeMarco - Telepath, and SA Deacon James - Empath, along with her extraordinary dog Braden, they strive to catch this psycho who is brutally murdering people of Sociable and leaving behind an interesting calling card.

I wanted to love this book. I really, really did. But I just didn't. I can only assume it's because this is my first book of this series and I haven't read and enjoyed the previous 14 installments, thus getting to know (and love I'm sure) the characters and the world.

It was well written, the characters were likable (I love Braden!), the mystery was intense and while slow building, left me satisfied, and it was a nicely detailed plot with multiple levels and mysteries with just enough darkness to keep my interest. I just personally didn't feel connected to the leading characters or the story, and once again, can only assume it's because I was just meeting them and trying to get caught up.

For fans of the BISHOP series, I think you will love this book. For new readers, if you don't feel like you need a deep connection inducing book, you will probably really like this. It successfully meshes elements of thriller, paranormal, suspense and mystery. Given the way I felt about it though, I would suggest reading the series from the beginning to fully appreciate what the author has produced here. I am a fan of Kay Hooper, and hope that I have a chance to get caught up with the SPU team in the not too distant future.

Crossover from the Otherworld Series to Fly By Night Series.

New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn returns with another thrilling foray into Otherworld—introducing a new cast of heroes alongside the D’Artigo sisters…

When the half-demon Carter approaches Menolly and her sisters desperately asking for their help, they think he's just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex's.

Now, Alex must join forces with the D'Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex's past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Fans of the Otherworld series will no doubt rush to get this novella as it's a chance to catch up with the lives and antics of the D'Artigo sisters but it's so much more than just a short read. This book introduces new characters which will feature in the authors new Fly By Night series. This is a short crossover story that is expanding Otherworld and giving greater depth and dimension to the people who inhabit it but rest assured it's still the same glorious ride that readers have come to expect from this amazingly talented author.

This story introduces Shimmer a dragon who is exiled from the Dragon Reaches for five years and sent Earthside to work for Alex a vampire who runs a magical investigation company. She goes missing, and Menolly and her sisters, (half human, half Fae and all attitude!) are asked to investigate. Menolly is already trying to solve the mystery of rogue vampires in Seattle and can't help but question whether or not there's a connection . Alex is an unknown and can Menolly and her sisters really trust him? As their investigation hots up its clear that a powerful and deadly foe without conscience is targeting Alex and anyone caught in the crossfire is in danger. Struggling to find Shimmer whilst catching the murderous vampires plaguing the city will put all their lives in peril but with an enemy who has revenge on his mind and anger in his heart to fight , there is no choice. Fight or die trying!

Most of this book is told from Menolly's point of view and as she is my favourite of the D'Artigo sisters I'm a happy reader! When we first read about Menolly at the beginning of this story she's somewhat at a loss. Menolly has recently lost a true friend and also her bar but in true Menolly style she's not down and out , no she's prepared to embrace new challenges . Unfortunately the problem of the rogue vampires is going to prove to be a lot more complicated then anyone could have predicted and add to that the mysterious Alex who has definitely been keeping under the supernatural radar and you can understand that this story is just the beginning. I think that's what just might irritate some readers as although there is an end of sorts, it's not a complete and absolute definitive ending. So in order to get to the truth readers will need to get the next book in this series.

This author writes very good urban fantasy in my opinion and although there are relationships within her books it's not really my idea of romantic fiction . These sisters have very unusual love lives but in this short story there's no real interaction .This story however pulled me in from the first page and it was such fun meeting new characters and I have to admit they are very intruiging. It's also worth noting that I thought this worked well as a standalone and would be an ideal way for new readers to sample the authors work although I have to admit that reading a series in order is clearly the best way to get maximum enjoyment . I loved catching up with the sisters and we even get a glimpse of a supporting character who previously has not been the most pleasant but Ms Galenorn gives a glimpse of his inner pain in this book. Her books are both dark and humorous at times and there's never a dull moment. Although Menolly may have started this story missing her friend but I think these new characters are about to rock her world! If the mission was to expand the Otherworld universe then mission well and truly accomplished!

THE BORDEN DISPATCHES Book #1

RELEASE DATE 9/2/14!

Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks; and when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one....

The people of Fall River, Massachusetts, fear me. Perhaps rightfully so. I remain a suspect in the brutal deaths of my father and his second wife despite the verdict of innocence at my trial. With our inheritance, my sister, Emma, and I have taken up residence in Maplecroft, a mansion near the sea and far from gossip and scrutiny.

But it is not far enough from the affliction that possessed my parents. Their characters, their very souls, were consumed from within by something that left malevolent entities in their place. It originates from the ocean’s depths, plaguing the populace with tides of nightmares and madness.
This evil cannot hide from me. No matter what guise it assumes, I will be waiting for it. With an axe.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
*Copy gifted from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

Fantastically unique and utterly intriguing, Maplecroft took a true crime story that I always found fascinating and turned it on its head to be an exciting slightly historical 'urban' fantasy with a compelling mystery thread.

It was beautifully written, as well. Ms. Priest has a wonderfully lyrical quality to her writing, and while it wasn't quite poetic, it was smooth as silk and when writing from each of her characters' POVs you couldn't help but feel like you were in the room with them. I particularly liked the way the author told the story as a series of diary/journal/correspondence entries by the different characters, all overlapping, and all flowing together to create the beautiful tapestry of the mystery. It also allowed the reader to formulate their own conclusions about not only the mystery, but the supernatural fantasy woven within.

I enjoyed Maplercroft much more than I actually expected to, and I'm very curious to see what's next in the Borden Dispatches!

Definitely recommended for mystery/urban fantasy readers looking for something fresh and compelling.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:

After taking this journey with our American and her Frenchman I honestly can't think of a better way for Michele to end the series.
There were some seriously sexy times, some really fun scenes, some slightly dark (and very human) moments, and under it all, heart and emotion that impacted me on a deeply visceral level.
I ran the gamut of emotions in this book, and that is a true sign of good story telling, and quite honestly, I can't thank Michele enough for allowing me to take this journey with her characters.
I absolutely loved it!
I highly recommend this series from start to finish, and promise that they will be books that will stick with you long after you've turned the last page.

WARRIORS OF THE MIST Book #3

RELEASE DATE: 9/2/14

Buy from Amazon / B&N

Cursed by the gods. Bound by brotherhood. Freed by love.

The Warriors of the Mist have fought side by side for centuries, but Kane alone has felt something darker calling to him. With the Kingdom of Agathia on the brink of rebellion, Kane knows that relying on dark magic to infiltrate the enemy’s court is dangerous but necessary despite the cost to his soul.

Lady Theda hopes to end the tyrannical reign of Duke Keirthan, the man who killed his own brother—Theda’s husband. But she has little hope of succeeding, until a mage-marked warrior appears.

For the first time in centuries, Kane is tempted not by dark magic, but by a woman who wants more than his protection. But with both of their hearts—and her people’s lives—in jeopardy, giving in to their passion may be a risk too great to take…

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Another wonderful installment in the Warriors of the Mist series and an ending perfect for all of those HEA seekers.

5 Warriors, pledged to the Lord and Lady of the River to fight for those in need. They have been battling the Duke of Agathia for some time as he takes over the land and suffuses it with his dark blood magic. Split apart, two try to fight from within, while the others protect the one who called them from without.

Kane was born with dark mage blood but he has never nurtured his 'gift'. His grandfather gave him the mage mark while he was still in the womb, and this, along with his stellar warrior skills allow him to be drafted into the Duke's inner guard. I loved his character. He's chivalrous, has some pretty serious inner demons that he battles, but is loyal and steadfast in his honorable quest, as well. When he finds lady Theda, it's wonderful to see his walls fall and his heart open.

Theda is a great heroine. She's been through hell and back, and yet she keeps fighting. Not so much for herself, but for those she loves. She's determined, smart, strong and willful, and she's not afraid to go after what she wants. In this case, what she ends up wanting is Kane, and their romance grows sweetly at first and then burns with a fire hard to ignore.

I've really enjoyed this series since book #1, and seeing everything come full circle was utterly enjoyable. I think this is the last book of the series, but Alexis did some things with some 'extra' characters that I can see turning into some novellas or a spin off possibly in the future.

I would highly recommend the WARRIORS OF THE MIST series, and while the books can be read easily as stand-alones, I would suggest reading them in order, especially with the extra surprises in Honor's Price that answer some questions and link all of the characters from all 3 books together beautifully.

If you're looking for a sweet historical fantasy romance with captivating characters, a robust story arc, and enough action and intrigue to keep you wanting more, pick these up. :)
