One of the best things about this story is the ghosts that follow Larue around. Abraham Lincoln, affectionately called Abe, is constantly trying to get her married.  He’s convinced she’s becoming an old maid (she’s only in her twenties mind you!).  Another ‘friend’ is an old lady who annoys Larue constantly, trying to get Larue to talk to her husband whom she left behind for her.  Each of the ghosts provided a giggle for me at some point.

The interactions between Mindy and Larue were hilarious as well -- as most best friend conversations are.

Larue's romance was lovely to read and I felt her pain when things started to go wrong.

Brianna was a great villain because most of us have met someone like her in our lives, which made her very easy to hate, and even funnier when the ghosts started tormenting her.

LITERAL ADDICTION’s guest reviewer gives this book 4 out of 5 skulls, and calls it “a light hearted and heartwarming story”.  The only thing that would have made it better for Carlyn was if there was more action in the middle of the story.  We would recommend this book for young adult to adult audiences, and fans of paranormal romance with a lot of wit.

Our Review [by LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha – Michelle L Olson]:

The Morganville Vampires are one of my favorite series.  When I discovered this series, what seems like eons ago, I knew I had found something special!  They may be classified as YA, but this is one I have no problem going back to, even after having just finished a steamy Paranormal Romance.  A lot of the other YA series that I had read following the Twilight Saga leave me lacking now, but never my Morganville.  Regardless of whether they’re YA or Adult, and they continue to get better and better.

The story opens with something as simple as a gym opening up in Morganville, providing entertainment and something to break the monotony for Morganville’s human residents.  This “gym” isn’t what it appears to be though, and those that sign up are in for a bit more than they bargained for.

We get more of our villains that we love to hate, more of our heroes that we love to love (and this time, it’s the women that play the larger heroine role!), more of our beloved and whacky Myrnin (that I personally just can’t get enough of… EVER!!), tons of action, plenty of intrigue, twists, turns, surprises, romance, and a storyline that was perfect for the series and its progression, for in it,  we get to explore more of Shane’s ‘dark side’ that we’ve seen showing itself over the past few books.

This book doesn’t need a lengthy review.  It was in a word…fantastic, and I can’t wait for the next installment!  Anyone who hasn't engrossed themselves in the world of the Morganville Vampires is missing out.  These are Must Adds for your To Be Read list! :-)

LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives Bite Club 4 and ½ Skulls and would recommend it to both YA and Adult Fantasy Readers, vampire lovers and even paranormal romance readers (if you’re looking for PNR on the tame side).  I do suggest, however, that you start the series from the beginning.  There is just WAY too much you’ll miss if you start here with Bite Club.  You won’t regret it, I promise…  :-)

Eleri Stone  will read just about anything - horror, science fiction, young adult, historical and contemporary fiction. But my favorite genres are fantasy, romance and especially paranormal romance!  She likes the mystery of the hidden, the forgotten and the unknown, and  quietly strong heroines and honorable men, real conflict and people who are smart, strong and brave enough to meet it head on.

She believes  in love. The kind of love that can bind people together and that has the power to redeem.

She loves  stories that remind you even in boring or stressful times that you never really know what might happen next. Sometimes life is waiting rooms and deadlines but sometimes life can be marvelously strange.

Redemption, Book #2 of the Yaguara saga

Adriano is a Jaguar shifter who was exiled from the Yaguara world, after he was set up to take the fall as a political tactic in the ongoing war. Feeling guilt for his actions and his inability to change what happened he continues to protect the secrets of his people and their history from the archaeologists who are getting a little close to the truth. It is his belief that by doing this and stealing the relic he will get his exile lifted and he can return to where he belongs. Amongst the archaeologists is Sophie, a grad student who is determined to unlock all the secrets of the ruins, while protecting her own. After she is kidnapped, Sophie discovers the truth about what is going on and she doesn't accept it easily.

I loved the setting of this story, I do feel it would have benefited from a little more description of the surroundings to help set the scene better. At the beginning we where led to believe that Sophie was an academic, putting all her energy into her studies in order to run from the pain of her past and Adriano is running from the choices he made that inadvertently led to his exile. In Sophie's case it almost feels like an afterthought, I did like that she had a negative response when she discovers her lover spends time prowling the jungle as a Jaguar. It's not a common occurrence in Paranormal Romance. The addition of the mercenary shifters to the mix, kidnapping Sophie and attempting to get the stone for themselves was a nice touch. I would have liked this part of the story to be a little longer & I did get a little confused as to who was on what side. A couple of extra scenes would have avoided this.

Although being book 2 in the series I don't feel as if I missed anything by not reading Mercy (book 1) but I do feel as if too many questions where left unanswered by this book.

All-in-all, LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives Redemption 3 Skulls.  It had a good premise – Indiana Jones meets Paranormal Romance – but the bulk fell just a tiny bit flat for us to give it more than a 3 Skull review.

Our Review [by LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha – Michelle L Olson]: 

I am a HUGE Breed series fan, and was looking forward to this release like nobody’s business.  Now that I’ve read it and had some time to think on it, I can safely say in print that this book was not my favorite of the series, but it was still a very good installment.  I’m sure as soon as I read Darker After Midnight, I’ll feel that everything that happened in Deeper Than Midnight  was  completely necessary for the series as a whole, as that’s what this book felt like to me… a set up for the next installment (similar to what other authors do with novellas released between books in a series).

I have always had a soft spot for Hunter, ever since he took it upon himself to be free and joined up with ‘the good guys’ (the silent, broody, ‘broken’ types are always a weakness of mine.  J)   My favorite Breed Male is Chase though, and this book was almost more about him than it was about Hunter.  While that should have made me very happy, it was this conundrum that sort of left me scratching my head and wondering if it was Lara’s intention for this book to be a big segue into Darker After Midnight, or if she really felt like she had to tell Hunter’s story and it just sort of ended up as a lead-in story to the next book. 

Character-wise:  Hunter was the strong, capable male we expect him to be in this book, but it was also wonderful to see him experience some real emotion -- heart breaking at times, frustrating at others, but wonderful.  As for Corinne, I wasn’t sure that I was going to like her at the beginning.  She felt a little weak to me, but after her secrets are revealed and her single minded determination becomes evident, you realize just how much of a survivor she really is and I started warming to her.  She and Hunter work well together and I think this was a good pairing in the end, but the steamy chemistry that we’ve come to expect from Lara’s Breed series just wasn’t there with these two.  I don’t know if it was done on purpose because of the history of each of the characters themselves and the fact that Lara felt that the usual explosiveness wouldn’t be believable with these two or what, but in my honest opinion, while enjoyable and believable, the romance was a little flat for me . 

Plotline:  As I stated earlier, a LARGE part of the book was about Chase and his struggles with demons within and without.  I loved that, and soaked up as much Harvard as I could with this book...  We get tie-ins with several of the other characters as well; Mira, Dante, Tess, etc, which was great also.  The baseline of what the synopsis hinted at though, Hunter and Corinne’s story and their ultimate goal as a team, while entertaining, felt like it never got closure, and I can only hope that more of that is resolved In Darker After Midnight as well.  I literally hit “next page” on my Kindle expecting at least another chapter only to find out that there WASN’T a next page…

All-in-all, LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives Deeper Than Midnight 3 1/2 Skulls.  It was well written, as everything in Lara’s repertoire is, and it was enjoyable, also as everything Lara writes is, but it left me wanting & wondering  a little bit too much to give it the 4+ Skulls I had hoped to award it.  I definitely recommend that all Midnight Breed fans read this, as there is so much ‘filler story’ in it, and so much of that ‘filler’ is Sterling Chase related, I can’t imagine reading Darker After Midnight without having read Deeper Than Midnight.

Lauren Dane Lauren Dane has been writing stories since she was able to use a pencil, and before that she used to tell them to people. Of course, she still talks nonstop, and through wonderful fate and good fortune, she’s now able to share what she writes with others. It’s a wonderful life!

The basics: Lauren is a mom, a partner, a best friend and a daughter. Living in the rainy but beautiful Pacific Northwest, she spends her late evenings writing like a fiend when she finally wrestles all of her kids to bed.

Goddess With A Blade

I really liked this book. The funny thing is that when I first read the title I thought, hmmm, what a catchy title. But, when I read the book and the history that explained that it meant more than some woman with a sword, I thought, now that is really good. I like that it is set in Las Vegas. I've only visited once and for only 24 hours at that, but, it was a truly different place. I also visited someone's home that was enough away from the strip that I could see what it was like for families to live there and what lawns and yards looked like. We drove in from Arizona so I got a good look at the scenery on the way in before it turned dark outside, then the look of things as the lights blazed at night from all the casinos and wow what a huge contrast. But, this book with the descriptions of the different places where Rowan went each day fed my mini-vacation imagination Even the descriptions of Ireland left me wanting to see them for myself.

The characters were a bit different. It is hard to have a vampire book stand out and also very difficult for an author to have originality. Outside of the romance genre vampires seem to have taken a backseat to dystopia and zombies so there is some room there for authors still writing about vampires to branch out and hopefully find their own place. Goddess With A Blade does that. It strikes out and tries to find its own place in a genre that is pretty-well saturated especially when some publishers are pushing paranormal romance as urban fantasy, much to my dismay. As someone who does NOT like a strictly romance book, regardless to whether it has vampires in it I prefer for a book to be advertised according to what it truly is and saying a paranormal romance is urban fantasy or muddying the waters is really bugging me. I do not mind if the book is urban fantasy with a romance in the background but I do not want it to be the cusp of the story. Goddess With A Blade is being shelved with the paranormal romances but so far the cusp of the story is Rowan, her history, and the mystery she is trying to solve. There are other parts to the story but they do not overwhelm the story so I can accept this book as one written the way I like them, with a kick butt hero/heroine and it doesn't matter to me which genre they shelve it in as long as there is action and cool supernatural powers. A good mystery is always a clincher.

The wonderfulness of this book can be gleaned from one of the best literary quotes ever in my opinion… “Never, has a great king been brought so low by one so slight.  My heart…you hold in your hands.  The mighty heart of an immortal king is more fragile than a butterfly’s wings in your grasp.  No arrow, no weapon, could pierce its stonelike shell.  And yet at your touch, at your kiss, it quivers like a frightened lamb.  I find there is anything I will not do if you only ask it.  These things I admit to you with great trepidation. –Maggie Shayne, Twilight Fulfilled”  If your heart did not just melt at that, then…

The last in an epic journey, Twilight Fulfilled left me laughing, cheering, squealing, and ultimately crying; all with a smile. 

An action-packed thrill ride, Twilight Fulfilled leads you on a roller coaster of human (er…immortal??) emotion, dissects the way that society affects our way of thinking with propaganda and the like, thereby planting seeds of doubt where none should belong.  It also proves that even in some of the direst of circumstances, love really CAN conquer all.

Knowing the author the little that I do, I’m almost certain that last one was the big ‘message’ she was hoping to get across with this book, and she did it beautifully.

I’m very saddened, yet in a light hearted way, to see this series come to an end.  It has been a cornerstone of strength for me on many an occasion and I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll be going back to its books for repeat performances and re-reads!

Maggie is a genius with the written word, truly did write vampires before vampires were cool, and has wrapped up Wings in the Night with a pretty blood red bow—a gift for any reader!

LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives Twilight Fulfilled 4 ½ Skulls. 

We definitely recommend it for ALL Maggie Shayne fans, Urban Fantasy readers, Vampire lovers, and even Paranormal Romance addicts (though this installment was more about the story and tying up the series than the sex).

Three cheers for Maggie Shayne, Twilight Fulfilled, and the entire Wings in the Night series.  You truly have been my Author Lifesaver….  J

Being the intelligent, curious woman that she is, Kira finds herself questioning what is really going on at the research facility she works for.  Getting a rush of bravery, she decides to take matters into her own hands and find out just what kind of secrets her bosses are keeping. 

Jaxon is a military guy officially on leave for the weekend and looking for a good time in Vegas, until he’s thrown into the middle of Kira’s little plan and everything goes to hell. 

Thrown together by circumstance, the two must work with one another, though the one thing they’ll have to work hardest at is making a decision what to do about the undeniable attraction between them. 

The character premise of this book was amazing… Shifters who each have additional psychic gifts as well, working together to rid the world of the bad guys, both human and non. 

The minute you meet each of the characters and learn their affinities, you develop an instant love for them, even if you already liked them before based on personality alone, you can’t help but start to pick your favorites and wish for the next books in the series before the first is even finished.  Add to that the fact that each and every one of them have a back-story that defines them and you have the first book of a series that will have you swearing because you have to wait for the next installment. 

This book has everything; and I mean everything!!  Shifters of multiple varieties, gremlins, sorcerers, necromancers, Fey, special-ops soldiers, government conspiracies, romance, mystery, action, wit… I could go on and on.  I read several reviews that said that it was overdone and unbelievable.  Hello, it’s paranormal!  As LITERAL ADDICTION’s motto says, “Beyond the natural and the normal lie the Supernatural and Paranormal.  Anything less…. Just isn’t enough!”  

The storyline was jam packed, but in my personal opinion, not overwhelming in the least.  It had a logical flow –beginning, crescendo, end – that had me literally vocalizing my discontent, excitement, etc while reading, and reading the last page with one though firmly in mind, “Aw, come on!  I have to wait until 2012!!?”.  J 

LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives this book 5 Skulls and would recommend it to Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Magick and Shifter fans far and wide.  As some of the low rating reviews will tell you though, if you’re looking for a simple, single storyline PNR, this is not it!  If you’re looking for a fast paced, action packed romance overflowing with paranormal that will have you squealing from mid-book throughout…this is a definite read!! 

I cannot wait for Book #2!  Huge kudos J.D!  J
