[Archive] LITERAL ADDICTION's Review of A Taste of Midnight

Lara Adrian As a child, Lara Adrian used to sleep with the covers up around her neck, afraid she might become the midnight prey of deadly vampires. Later on, under the influence of Bram Stoker and Anne Rice, she had to wonder if her fear wasn't actually something else: a secret desire to walk in a darker world, to live a dangerous and sensual dream with a man of seductive, preternatural power. It is that twining of fear and desire that fuels Lara's own fantasies today, and the idea that she explores in her New York Times bestselling Midnight Breed series of vampire romance novels from Bantam Dell Books.

With an ancestry stretching back to the Mayflower and the court of King Henry VIII, Lara Adrian lives with her husband in coastal New England, surrounded by centuries-old graveyards, hip urban comforts, and the endless inspiration of the broody Atlantic Ocean

A Taste of Midnight, Book #9.5 of the Midnight Breed series
Author:  Lara Adrian

Synopsis:   The Great Awakening approaches . . .
A shimmering holiday gala lights up an ancient castle in the Scottish Highlands, but beautiful widowed Breedmate Danika MacConn feels alone in the crowd. Even among the friends and festivity of the Darkhaven celebration, she can’t forget her lost love, a fallen warrior of the Order. Her brief return to her mate’s homeland has become treacherous after rejecting the advances of a dangerous Edinburgh crime boss with a taste for blood sport. As Danika seeks to expose the vampire and his dark trade, she discovers an unexpected ally in his forbidding, enigmatic henchman, Brannoc, a man who exudes heat, danger, and dark menace—and seems somehow achingly familiar. Bran has his own reasons for wanting to keep Dani out of his employer’s business . . . and his own secrets he means to keep buried. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a woman who tempts the wildest part of his Breed nature—especially when that woman is Danika MacConn, the one woman capable of bringing him to his knees.
Our Review [by Michelle L. Olson – LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha]:
While Taste of Midnight is a novella, it felt robust like a full novel and I was fully captivated from the first page to the last.
A Taste of Midnight is the story of Danika, Conlan’s Breedmate widow and Malcolm, Conlan’s old best friend from Scotland.
Under very unusual circumstances the two are brought together again and realize that the love that Mal had for Dani all those years ago never died, and while Dani loved Con very much, she always wondered what it might have been like if she had married the other guy.
The romance was steamy, the action intense, the dialogue engaging… and all of this in a Short, not a full length novel.
I will make a bold statement and say that I actually enjoyed A Taste of Midnight more than Hunter’s entire book, and I cannot wait for Chase’s book in Darker after Midnight.
LITERAL ADDICTION gives A Taste of Midnight 4 1/2 skulls and would recommend it to everyone, especially Midnight Breed fans and followers.  While this novella can be read as a stand alone, we highly suggest reading the 9 books before A Taste of Midnight to get the full impact of the story.
